MI EGIE SWITIE MOENGO

2017, 16 COLUMNS AND PHOTOS

Early 2017 I was in Moengo,Suriname for three months with my family. Here we lived and worked during an artist in residency at the Tembe Arts Studio, an initiative of Marcel Pinas.

Because of my fascination for the concept of home, I started talking to residents of Moengo about the land on which they live, make use of and love. I asked them about the square meter that is of great value to them personally. I took photographs of these pieces of land and wrote stories that tell about the person, but also about customs and the history of Moengo.

From august 2017 these 16 pieces will appear as a monthly column in the Parbode magazine.

When the cloumns have been published in the Parbode they can be read on my blog.
Eventually they will be bundled in an alternative travel guide.

Moengo is located in the east of Surinam, close to the border of French Guyana. The place was founded in the beginning of the 20th century, after the Surinamese Bauxite Society had discovered bauxite's recoverable stocks.During the cival war in the late 80’s most of the inhabitants had to fleed their homes.
